And just like that, winter 2021 has passed us by! The speed of the season exacerbated by the unforeseen nation-wide lockdown of the Covid pandemic which began in mid-August. We hope you all stayed safe, and we look forward to 2022 and putting the disruptions of lockdowns behind us.
Anyway, what a winter it was for the ski bunnies amongst us. It was a bit of a slow start to the season with a wait for a big dumping but once it arrived, mother nature continued to deliver regular snow falls throughout the season. The ski conditions have remained good right into spring with more snow falling late into spring and Cardrona extending their season by a week. Sadly, some key winter events had to be cancelled, causing a huge disappointment to organisers, competitors and spectators alike. We will certainly be eying them up next year as there is some great talent to be watched across the different events. Cardrona and Treble Cone offer unique downhill experiences right on Wanaka’s doorstep. While Cardrona boasts a vast variety of groomed terrain across 5 chairlifts, a jump park and half pipe, Treble Cone offers the best off-piste skiing, huge basins and unrivalled views of the Lake Wanaka area. Grab your rental gear in town before you go or get everything you need up the mountain. Ski shuttles run from town and at the base of both mountains.
If downhill skiing isn’t your thing, rest assured there are still plenty of outdoor activities to sink your teeth into! Give cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or dog-sledding a go up at Snow Farm which has plenty of acres to explore. Wind your way along the valley to see the backcountry huts or have a race around the home base trails.
If the weather has kept you off the mountain, keep the kids entertained for hours at Puzzle World experiencing the weird and wonderful optical illusions. The Toy and Transport Museum could take all afternoon to meander through one of the largest private collections in the world, uncovering fascinating vehicles from toy boats to wartime aircraft.
And of course, after all of that exploring and activity, tummies will be grumbling and there are plenty of options to explore. One of our favourites, which incorporates entertainment with dining, is Hook Wanaka. This unique concept allows you to catch your own salmon in the many beautiful pools before being expertly prepared by the in-house chef for lunch. The fishing will bring laughs and joy, and the beautiful salmon will leave you feeling more than satisfied after a great afternoon out. Hook is also accessible from Maple Lodge via the pretty Cardrona River walking track.
Maple Lodge was busy over the winter, with plenty of family groups taking advantage of our great property. With 7 e-suite bathrooms, and 2 living areas, there is heaps of space to spread out, separate the kids from the adults in between ski trips and enjoy a week-long get together. Kids enjoy having the fires lit toasting marshmallows and exploring the expansive gardens. While adults can relax in the spa pool after a long day on the mountain or go for a walk down to the river to enjoy the peace and quiet.
It’s never too early to start planning your trip next winter with bookings already flowing in for Skiing 2022! Cheers Charlotte
