I absolutely love autumn! It is my favourite time of year for various reasons – but namely, the beautiful autumn leaves we have in Central Otago and at Maple Lodge.
I’m not writing this because I like boasting, it’s just that I wish everyone could enjoy the colours we have on our very own lawn! You will see every autumn hue on the spectrum from bright yellows to deep reds. Our fiery colours start to appear in mid-March and are still showing off at the end of April – with the best display happening in the first 3 weeks of April.
So it’s no wonder Maple Lodge has hosted a small, intimate wedding and Amber Emm’s biannual Art tour (@amberemmart on Facebook) during April.
Joe and Magdalena hosted their small, intimate wedding of 15 people at Maple Lodge over Easter. Sadly, their guest list was impacted by Covid and celebrations went ahead without any family present. But Maple Lodge was able to provide a great venue for their wedding weekend with friends. Hiring the Lodge, they invited 6 other couples to enjoy a 4-night celebration over Easter. Although wind meant their plans of a heli trip to the top Coromandel Peak for the ceremony were dashed, the autumn leaves at Maple Lodge still provided a spectacular backdrop for photos. (They were still able to sneak up to Coromandel Peak the following day for more pics). With catering provided by Urban Grind, everything was in one place for the special occasion.
Next event on the agenda was the second instalment of Amber Emm’s week-long art tour. Hosted at Maple Lodge, Amber brought 6 art students to Wanaka and it was timed just perfectly to capture Central Otago at its best. It is no wonder the tour is set to become a biannual event. Although they found plenty of lovely spots around Wanaka to set up for their day’s painting, the widest range of colour was on show at Maple Lodge. The property is perfect for retreats and tours such as this with each artist able to have not only their own bedroom but en-suite as well. A second living area in addition to our large living/dining also allowed for plenty of room indoors in case of poor weather during the retreat.
In addition to our own guests visiting Wanaka during April, the Festival of Colour was again held this year. Known as the ‘best little arts festival in New Zealand’ the festival celebrates music, theatre, dance and conversation over 7 days in Wanaka. From world premieres to internationally performing artists and local talent, the festival is another wonderful string to Wanaka’s bow of attractions. With events for kids to enjoy, it’s a great reason to bring the whole family to Wanaka for your autumn getaway. While next year’s dates are yet to be announced, the Festival of Colour is one to be marked in the calendars!
Time to gather your art-loving friends and plan your trip next autumn! Cheers Charlotte
